Facts & Figures In China
China plans to launch its second lunar probe in October 2010 in preparation for an unmanned moon landing by the end of 2012. The Chang'e 2 probe is an advanced version of the Chang'e 1 that crashed into the moon in a controlled collision at the end of a 16-month mission in March, 2009. China, Russia and the US are the only countries to launch men into orbit. The lunar exploration program also calls for a mission to return samples of the moon's surface in 2015. A manned lunar mission is also possible by 2017 — three years ahead of NASA's initial target date for returning to the moon.

Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China, maker of the nation’s first narrow-body passenger plane, aims to win around 100 orders for the aircraft by year-end as it challenges Boeing Co. and Airbus SAS, reported Bloomberg. Most contracts will likely come from domestic customers, Yuan Wenfeng, Comac’s deputy general manager, program management department, said today in an interview at the Singapore Air Show. The company also plans to complete the preliminary design for the plane by the end of the year, he said. Comac expects to sell more than 2,000 C919s over 20 years Yuan said, as China, the world’s fastest-growing major aviation market, tries to end its reliance on Boeing and Airbus.
